The Anahim Lake Airport is a year-round airport with a 3,936 ft x 75 ft asphalt runway with fuel facilities serving the West Chilcotin area. Scheduled service to Anahim Lake is provided by Pacific Coastal Airlines. Many charter and private planes use the airport and bring tourists to the tourism and recreation opportunities in the area.
The airport is owned by the Cariboo Regional District and operated under contract by Snooka Aircraft Services. The contractor is responsible for the maintenance of the airport and reports to the Anahim Lake Airport Commission, which is responsible for overseeing the airport.
In 2017, the airport had a total of 2,347 plane arrivals and departures; 33 of these were medevacs.
Medevacs are the medical evacuation of emergency patients by air transportation.
For the residents of Anahim Lake, having an airport can mean the difference between life and death. It is the quickest way to be evacuated when a medical emergency occurs. Located about 340 kilometres west of Williams Lake, the airport provides a vital transportation link to the area with daily scheduled service to Vancouver.
Brief History of Airport Works
In 2014, the new terminal building officially opened to serve passengers and scheduled flight service, act as the airport office and improve service levels for visitors, tourism operators, medical personnel, RCMP and other users. During emergency events, the terminal will also provide office space and a lounge area for use by emergency personnel. The terminal was constructed in partnership between the Cariboo Regional District, the Province’s Towns for Tomorrow Program, Northern Development Initiative Trust, Cariboo Chilcotin Beetle Action Coalition and the Federal Government’s Community Works Fund Program.
In 2012, a 706 ft stopway was added to the end of Runway 13 in order to allow for increased passenger carrying capacity and safer winter usage. The extension was made possible through grant funding from the Province’s Towns for Tomorrow Program and Northern Development Initiative Trust.
In 2011, the Cariboo Regional District purchased a runway sweeper to help maintain favourable runway conditions in the winter. This project was made possible with a federal grant of $171,320 from the Airport Capital Assistance Program of Transport Canada.
In 2000, the Cariboo Regional District carried out major improvement works to restore the runway and taxiway. Close to $1 million was invested in a new surface that improves water drainage, provides frost protection, and adds long-term functionality to the airport operations. This project was made possible with a federal grant of $941,600 from the Airport Capital Assistance Program of Transport Canada.
