Improper use of some of our disposal facilities has resulted in problems which are costly to remedy and hazardous to public safety. Typical problems we encounter include:
- indiscriminant dumping of unauthorized waste materials in marshalling yards; and,
- people dumping refuse on landings in front of refuse disposal trenches and transfer bins.
Marshalling yards are provided for the disposal of wood waste and scrap metals only.
All other waste must be taken to a landfill site. Other waste creates a problem, which impedes the efforts of contractors to salvage metals and appliances from the yards. It can also attract bears, which is a safety hazard. Taking your garbage to the appropriate site will reduce your tax burden and help keep the operation of these sites running smoothly.
Dumping garbage onto landings, as shown in the photo at left, obstructs access to the trench by other users and creates a hazard to vehicle tires because of the possible presence of sharp objects in the refuse.
Placing household garbage anywhere but in the trench or transfer station bin at a site is a violation of our rural refuse bylaw and is subject to a minimum $100 fine. Our inspection staff are now authorized to ticket violators for bylaw infractions.
Successful operation of our landfills and transfer stations ultimately depends upon public cooperation. To do your part to minimize tax dollars spent on refuse site maintenance, the following guidelines are provided:
- All household garbage must be placed completely into the trench or transfer bins. Nothing is to be left on the landing in front of the trench or bins, or in the marshalling yard for metals and wood waste;
- Metals, appliances and wood waste are to be separated into their designated areas within the marshalling yard. No construction or other waste materials are permitted. Signs are posted in the yard to assist the public in this regard;
- Large items, such as mattresses, sofas, furniture, etc., can be placed into the trench. In the case of a transfer station, materials that cannot fit through the door of the bin must be transported to the nearest refuse site that can accommodate these materials. Signs are posted at transfer stations and marshalling yards indicating where these sites are located.
